Fibroblast

A fibroblast is the principal working cell of the dermis, responsible for producing and maintaining the connective-tissue framework that gives skin its structure. Fibroblasts synthesise collagen, elastin, and other matrix components, and they also secrete enzymes and signalling molecules that regulate how that framework is remodelled.

Fibroblasts matter for skin because they are, in effect, the builders and caretakers of the dermal support layer. When they are active and healthy, they replenish collagen and elastin and help repair everyday damage. With age, and under the influence of UV radiation and oxidative stress, fibroblasts become less active and less numerous, and the balance shifts toward breakdown of the matrix rather than its renewal. This decline is a core reason skin gradually loses firmness, thickness, and the ability to bounce back, and it underpins the visible signs of both intrinsic ageing and photoaging.
