Elastin

Elastin is a stretchy structural protein in the dermis that allows skin to recoil back into shape after being stretched or compressed. Where collagen provides strength and support, elastin provides the springiness that lets skin snap back, working alongside collagen within the extracellular matrix built by fibroblasts.

Elastin is important for skin because it underlies elasticity, the quality most associated with a firm, resilient surface. A key biological fact shapes how it is discussed: most elastin is laid down early in life, and the body's capacity to make new, well-organised elastin fibres in adult skin is very limited. As a result, elastin damage tends to accumulate rather than being readily replaced. UV radiation is especially harmful here, driving a disorganised build-up of abnormal elastic material known as solar elastosis, which is a hallmark of sun-damaged skin and contributes to leathery texture and sagging.

  • Sun protection is the single most impactful way to preserve existing elastin, since UV is its major aggressor.

The most realistic strategy focuses on protecting what remains through daily UV defence and reducing cumulative environmental damage, so that natural elasticity is maintained for as long as possible.
