How it works

Maltobionic acid belongs to the bionic acids, a subgroup of the polyhydroxy acids. Where glycolic acid is a two-carbon molecule, maltobionic acid is a sugar acid derived from maltose, carrying a long tail of hydroxyl groups. Two consequences follow from that size and structure.

The first is that it penetrates slowly. Exfoliation happens at the surface, gradually, rather than as a rapid loosening of the upper corneocyte layers, which is why the tingle and flush that accompany small hydroxy acids are largely absent. The second is that all those hydroxyl groups bind water, so it is a humectant in its own right — it hydrates while it exfoliates, rather than exfoliating at the cost of hydration. It is also a chelator, binding metal ions that catalyse oxidation, which is a formulation benefit as much as a skin one.

The evidence

Smaller than for the alpha hydroxy acids. There are published studies reporting improved texture, firmness and hydration, and studies reporting good tolerance in skin that reacts to glycolic acid, including after cosmetic procedures. A substantial part of that body of work comes from the researchers who developed and commercialised the bionic acid category, which is worth stating plainly rather than leaving for the reader to discover.

Nothing in the record suggests it matches a strong alpha hydroxy acid for speed or depth. It is presented as the gentler option, and the evidence supports that framing rather than contradicting it.

Concentration

No single established figure. Cosmetic products use a range, higher than an equivalent alpha hydroxy acid because the molecule is larger and slower, and formulation pH matters as much as the percentage — an acid partly neutralised is a different product from the same percentage left acidic. A percentage alone therefore tells you less here than it would for glycolic acid.

Conflicts & combinations

It layers more forgivingly than small acids, but the general rule still holds: stacking it with a retinoid, a stronger acid and a physical scrub is how cumulative irritation happens regardless of how mild each step is. Polyhydroxy acids are generally described as not increasing sun sensitivity the way alpha hydroxy acids do, which is a point in their favour, but daily sunscreen remains the baseline for anyone exfoliating at all. It pairs well with humectants and with niacinamide, and its chelating behaviour helps stabilise the rest of the formula.

How is it different from glycolic acid?

It is a much larger molecule, so it penetrates slowly and works at the surface. That means less sting and less visible peeling, and also a slower, subtler result.

Does it make skin sun-sensitive?

Polyhydroxy acids are generally described as not increasing sun sensitivity in the way alpha hydroxy acids do. That is not a reason to skip sunscreen, which anyone exfoliating should be using daily anyway.

Can I use it if glycolic acid burns?

That is the main reason it exists. Tolerance is usually much better, but patch test first — better tolerated is not the same as universally tolerated.

Is it a moisturiser or an exfoliant?

Both, in a modest way. Its many hydroxyl groups bind water, so it hydrates while it works, which is unusual among exfoliating acids.

Who funded the research?
