Melanocyte
A melanocyte is the specialised skin cell that produces melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye colour. Melanocytes sit mainly in the lowest layer of the epidermis, where they manufacture melanin inside small packages and pass it to surrounding keratinocytes, distributing pigment across the skin surface.
Melanocytes matter because they control how skin responds to the sun and how pigmentation appears. When stimulated, chiefly by UV radiation but also by inflammation and hormonal signals, they increase melanin output. This is a protective response, but it is also the origin of many pigmentation concerns. Overactive or unevenly stimulated melanocytes can produce the patchy pigment seen in melasma, the localised marks of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after acne or injury, and the accumulated spots associated with long-term sun damage. Notably, people of all skin tones have roughly similar numbers of melanocytes; differences in colour come mainly from how active these cells are and the type of melanin they make.

Framing pigmentation as a matter of melanocyte behaviour, rather than a stain to be scrubbed away, leads to more realistic and safer expectations.
