How it works
Alcohol denat is ethanol with a bittering or denaturing agent added so it cannot be drunk. Chemically it is the same short-chain, volatile alcohol as in a hand sanitiser, and every property that makes it controversial follows from that volatility.
Formulators use it for four things. It dissolves ingredients water cannot carry, which is how many UV filters and fragrance materials get into a product at all. It evaporates in seconds, leaving a weightless, quick-dry finish — the reason most high-SPF sunscreens that feel like nothing contain it. It thins a formula so it spreads in a thin, even film. And it is antimicrobial at high enough levels, reducing the preservative load.
The evidence
The case against it is real but narrower than the internet suggests. Ethanol at high concentration dissolves stratum corneum lipids and raises transepidermal water loss; that is well established, and it is why repeated hand sanitising cracks skin. What is far less established is that the modest amounts used in a leave-on cosmetic, evaporating within seconds and formulated alongside humectants and emollients, do measurable long-term barrier damage on intact skin. The strongest experimental effects come from high concentrations under occlusion or repeated exposure — conditions a sunscreen does not reproduce.
Position in the ingredient list matters more than presence. High in the list means a substantial share of the formula; low down, past the thickeners, means a trace used as a solvent.
Suitability
- Oily and acne-prone skin: often the reason a product feels bearable in heat and humidity
- Normal skin: no meaningful concern in a well-formulated product
- Dry, eczema-prone, rosacea-prone or actively compromised skin: this is the group with a real reason to avoid it
Concentration
Anywhere from under 1% as a solvent to 30% or more in a fast-drying sunscreen or toner. There is no safety threshold to quote; the question is what the rest of the formula does to compensate.
Conflicts & combinations
The interaction worth knowing is with actives that already stress the barrier. Alcohol-heavy toners stacked with retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or frequent acid exfoliation compound the same irritation, and that combination — not the alcohol alone — is what usually produces the tight, stinging, flaking skin people blame on it. Alongside humectants and occlusives in a well-built formula, it is a texture trade-off rather than a hazard.
