How it works
Dioic acid — octadecenedioic acid on an ingredient list — is an eighteen-carbon fatty acid with a carboxyl group at each end. It reaches pigment by a route no other common brightener uses: rather than blocking tyrosinase directly, it binds the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors, particularly PPAR-gamma, and that signalling reduces melanin production upstream.
The same receptor activity affects sebaceous output, which is why one ingredient turns up in both brightening serums and products aimed at oily, congested skin. Its structure is worth noting: it is a longer relative of azelaic acid, which is a nine-carbon dicarboxylic acid, and the two share a broadly similar profile of pigment and acne activity.
The evidence
The trial that made its reputation is a 2009 comparison in 96 women with melasma: 1% dioic acid against 2% hydroquinone over 12 weeks. Both reduced melasma by more than 40% and neither outperformed the other. That is a real result on a real endpoint, though one study on one population is a narrower base than the decades of data behind hydroquinone.
On acne, 2% octadecenedioic acid has been compared favourably with azelaic acid at 20% and benzoyl peroxide at 5%, with notably less stinging and burning — which for a pigment-and-acne ingredient is a meaningful advantage, since irritation is what causes people to stop.
What the evidence does not cover: long-term use, darker skin tones beyond the trial populations, and how it performs against modern combination therapy rather than hydroquinone alone.
Suitability
- Melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation, especially where hydroquinone is unavailable or unwanted
- Oily and acne-prone skin, where the sebum effect is a second reason to use it
- Sensitive skin: better tolerated than most brightening actives at equivalent effect
Concentration
1% is the studied brightening dose and 2% the acne dose. Nothing suggests going higher helps, and the trial data sits at these levels.
Conflicts & combinations
No conflicts of note — it does not need the low pH that vitamin C or the acids do, so it layers freely. As with every pigment treatment, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is not optional but the actual active half of the protocol: melasma recurs on sun exposure faster than any topical can clear it.
