Keratinization
Keratinization is the process by which skin cells called keratinocytes mature as they travel from the base of the epidermis toward the surface, gradually filling with the structural protein keratin and losing their nuclei. By the time they reach the outermost layer, the stratum corneum, they have become flattened, non-living cells that form the tough, protective barrier of the skin.
This journey is a continuous cycle. New cells are produced at the base, mature on the way up, and are eventually shed from the surface in a process called desquamation. In healthy skin the pace of production, maturation, and shedding stays roughly in balance, which is what keeps the surface smooth and the barrier intact. This overall renewal is often referred to as cell turnover.
When keratinization is disrupted, the consequences are visible. If cells do not shed cleanly, they can build up and give the skin a rough, dull, or flaky texture, and within the follicle a similar buildup can contribute to clogged pores. Several skin conditions involve abnormal keratinization. Understanding the process helps explain why exfoliating acids and retinoids are common tools: they influence how quickly cells mature and how readily the surface layer is shed, rather than simply scrubbing the skin.
