Two-Finger Rule
The number printed on a sunscreen is measured, in the laboratory, at a defined thickness — two milligrams of product per square centimetre of skin. That is a laboratory quantity, and there is no way to feel it. The two-finger rule exists to get close to it without a scale: squeeze the product in a line along the index finger and again along the middle finger, then spread both over face and neck. The teaspoon rule is the same idea by volume, putting roughly a quarter-teaspoon on the face and neck and about a shot glass over an adult body.
What makes this worth a name is what happens below the tested amount. Studies that measure how much people actually apply consistently find a fraction of the laboratory dose, and the protection achieved falls away faster than the shortfall alone suggests. The practical consequence is uncomfortable but useful: a high number applied thinly can deliver less than a lower number applied properly.
The rule is an approximation and should be treated as one. Fingers differ in length, nozzles differ in width, and a thick mineral cream and a watery fluid do not squeeze alike. It was devised for the face and neck; the body needs its own measure rather than a scaled guess. A sunscreen in a stick or a cushion is not measurable this way at all, which is a reason to treat those as top-ups rather than as the main application.
In practice, most people find it easier to apply in two thinner passes than in one heavy smear, and easier still to be honest about the parts routinely missed: the hairline, the ears, the sides of the neck, the eyelid margin. Reapplication matters as much as the first dose, and makeup with an SPF figure on it is not a realistic way to deliver either.
