How it works

Coenzyme Q10, or ubiquinone, is a naturally occurring antioxidant that our cells use as an electron carrier in mitochondrial energy production. Levels decline in skin with age and cumulative UV exposure, which is the rationale for topical supplementation. Applied to skin, it scavenges free radicals generated by UV light and pollution before they damage lipids and DNA, and it has been shown to help fibroblasts maintain normal collagen and elastin synthesis under oxidative stress rather than shifting into a degradative state.

The evidence

Studies dating back over a decade have shown topical CoQ10 reduces UVB-induced oxidative damage in cultured skin cells and modestly improves fine lines and skin roughness with regular use over several weeks, though large-scale modern trials remain more limited compared to the depth of evidence behind vitamin C or niacinamide.

Suitability

A gentle, well-tolerated antioxidant suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin, as a preventive anti-aging step. It won't dramatically resurface skin the way an AHA or retinoid does, but it complements those actives by defending against the oxidative stress that accelerates visible aging.

Concentration

Effective formulations typically use around 0.3-1%. Higher percentages don't show proportionally greater benefit given the molecule's already-limited skin penetration at any dose.

Conflicts & combinations

No known conflicts. Combines well with other antioxidants like vitamin E, ferulic acid, and vitamin C for a broader, more resilient environmental defense stack.

Frequently asked
What does CoQ10 do for skin?

It acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and helping support collagen-producing cells against oxidative stress.

Does CoQ10 reduce wrinkles?

With consistent use it can modestly improve fine lines and skin roughness, mainly by preventing further oxidative damage.

Can I use CoQ10 with vitamin C?

Yes, they work well together as complementary antioxidants.

Is CoQ10 good for sensitive skin?

Yes, it's generally gentle and well tolerated.

Is CoQ10 safe during pregnancy?

It's likely low risk given its natural presence in the body, but use with caution and consult your doctor.
