How it works
Sulforaphane belongs to a category most antioxidants do not: it is an indirect antioxidant. Vitamin C and vitamin E work by being consumed — each molecule neutralises an oxidant and is spent. Sulforaphane instead activates Nrf2, a transcription factor that switches on the genes for the skin's own phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes, including glutathione S-transferase and NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase.
The consequence is a longer and different kind of protection. Rather than adding a fixed quantity of antioxidant capacity, it raises the cell's own capacity for a period measured in days rather than hours, which is why the effect outlasts the application.
The evidence
Unusually good for a botanical. Human work at Johns Hopkins applied broccoli sprout extract to skin and then exposed it to ultraviolet light, reporting a meaningful reduction in erythema against untreated skin on the same person. That is a controlled human endpoint, not a cell assay.
The limit is that this is protection against oxidative stress, not sun protection. It does not absorb or block ultraviolet, it has no SPF, and it does not substitute for sunscreen — it reduces some of the damage from what gets through.
Suitability

- Sensitive skin: generally well tolerated
- Photodamaged and ageing skin, as prevention rather than correction
Concentration
Rarely stated, and complicated by delivery. Sulforaphane itself is unstable, so formulas often supply glucoraphanin — the precursor — along with myrosinase, the enzyme that converts it, and the conversion happens on application. A label naming broccoli extract without either is a weaker proposition than one that names both.
Conflicts & combinations
No conflicts, and a genuinely complementary pairing with direct antioxidants: vitamin C is consumed as it works while sulforaphane raises the enzymes that keep working afterwards, so the two do different jobs rather than duplicating one. It sits under sunscreen, not instead of it — the evidence supports it as an addition to sun protection and nothing in it justifies using less.
